Mina’s Current Release – The Holiday Album…
is something for the yuletide fireside, but you just may play it year-round. Recently appearing on television, including on the Style Network and for various non-profits and charities, Mina has always been a stand-out. Her music is an irresistible synthesis of Jazz, R&B, and Gospel; Mina is an American-born Korean, with modern sensibilities and respect for her heritage. Her soulful vocals draw comparisons to Alicia Keys and tastefulness to Diana Krall, but her bright personality and eclectic background are utterly distinct.
Born Into A Family of Music and Performance…
Mina’s father was a renowned Rock musician and her mother a model and bass player- she recalls, “There was always music, I thought that’s how every home was- maybe it should be! It’s pretty special to grow up with live background music…” After her parents became Christian missionaries, Mina spent her childhood immersed in the rich musical diversity and talent of choirs and musical groups with the Salvation Army, the Atlanta International Corps and Community Center, and others- Mina shares; “The talent is amazing, but it’s so much more- The sheer expression of that music, it’s powerful. It’s moving. And you know, those folks can sing.”
She Developed Her Own Musical Identity…
amidst a broad range of musical exposure, she also cultivated a playful approach to cultural expectations – “Asians are sometimes stereotyped as being classical music junkies. Well, I’m true to form in my own way. To me, Jazz is ‘American Classical music.’ Both my parents are Korean, and I’m proud of my heritage, but I am American. My heart is in Jazz, and the standards.” Almost inevitably, Mina attended a slew of music conservatories, focusing on vocals, trumpet and piano, was recruited for various tours, and developed her skills on the road and in the studio.
Recently, Mina Focused Her Efforts With A Team of World-Class Musicians
to create her new Holiday Album. Already sparking praise and pre-orders, Mina takes it all in stride “It’s what I do. It’s who I am. Music is the measure of all my growth, all the moments that define me- as a Woman, American, Korean, Mother, Artist- they all converge in notes and melody.” A beautiful song, indeed.
